Lymphoedema

Is swelling as a result of a defective lymphatic system it is a medical condition that requires a specific treatment protocol, the swelling is generally found in the limbs, but can be found within the trunk as well particularly post-mastectomy treatment.

Primary lymphoedema is a condition that is either present at birth or develops before the age of 35.  It generally affects the lower limbs and is caused by defective or absent lymph nodes or vessels or dysfunction in the flow of lymph.

Secondary lymphoedema is a condition that is resulted from trauma to the lymphatic vessels, nodes or the flow of lymphatic fluid.  This can be caused by:

·          An injury or trauma to the area resulting in damage to the lymph vessels or nodes

·          Surgery or irradiation to the area affecting the lymph nodes in particular

When the lymphoedema progresses there will be complications including cellulitis, keratinised skin, fistulas and reduced mobility.

Other types of oedema

Oedemas can be a result of malfunctions in other systems of the body and these needs to be referred to a medical practitioner.  Not all types of oedema are suitable for MLD and CDT therefore accurate medical diagnosis is essential.

Venous Oedema

This oedema is formed as a result of venous valve failure, leading to swelling, tightness and sometimes pain.  Venous Ulcers can form and these can be treated with MLD as it has excellent skin healing properties; these can only be treated with the referral of your medical practitioner.  Please note arterial oedemas cannot be treatment with MLD or compression treatment.
