Seroma – post operative scar
AG a 42 year old woman, had recently undergone a hysterectomy. Following this she had complications involving leakage of lymphatic fluid from the scar in vast quantities called a seroma. This unfortunately went on for four weeks having been supported by nursing care to change the dressings. AG came to me for MLD as she felt she needed to take control of the lymph fluid which was pooling around the scar and in the abdomen, she felt unwell and had tightness in the abdomen with loss of sensation in the tummy area.
AG was treated twice a week for a period of two weeks with two follow up appointments. I concentrated on stimulating the deep lymphatic nodes to encourage drainage in the trunk area which had oedema and the neck, including working lightly over the scar to encourage drainage from the scar which was causing an uncomfortable ridge. AG was very committed to the homecare and performed the simple lymph drainage techniques herself at home.
The results have been pleasing, now AG with the help of MLD is able to maintain the reduction in fluid along the scar and in addition to that the general trunk oedema is improved. AG now has stretchy skin where it was once quite tough, indicating the reduction in fluid.
AG comments:- “For me MLD me meant I was able to take control of my condition for myself with the help and support of Rebecca, I no longer felt isolated and on my own.
Rebecca has been able to improve my condition from an almost leathery looking patch on my tummy to soft smooth skin. She has also been able to help oedema around my rib area, not something I had been aware of but after MLD the definition of that area was much improved!
I would like to thank Rebecca for her care, concern and for being able to see the need for more MLD therapists who can make such a difference”.
